Wakan Tipi Awanyankapi will develop and test a new model of Indigenous urban land stewardship by creating a co-management agreement with the City of St. Paul. This work innovates the spectrum of land back models by reclaiming Indigenous decision-making power over an urban sacred site through the leadership of a Native-led nonprofit. The ultimate aim of this work is to promote Indigenous self-determination by building capacity to restore, manage and steward lands.
To create a model of public-private partnership with government agencies that will transform the way government respects and honors Dakota history and cultural beliefs in managing lands and waters
To advance healing among the Dakota people harmed by disconnection from their spiritual homeland at Wakan Tipi, and to increase the number of neighbors of color who use St. Paul’s Swede Hollow Park
