Fellow Learning Log

Embracing the new path of being a Fellow means truly reaching deep about where you are and where you are going. I have spent so much time in self reflection and what it means to build a new path forward. It has felt unwieldy at times, inspiring at others. I find it also means really the greatness in those around you. For me, I really struggle with imposter syndrome, part of that was being a little incredulous that I actually knew all of these amazing people, with such rich guidance. However I do, and my network is so so rich and full. Embrace this awareness and lean into really listening to those around you.
I am writing this learning log as I sink into my sabbatical. I am checked out from email, my schedule is clear, some travel is booked. Releasing into true rest is uncomfortable and foreign. It is not how I have walked through this world for the past 37 years. That is how long it has been since I had a break this long from working. The radical gift of rest is life changing.
In addition to preparing to rest I have been able to truly be present and connected with my colleagues across the country. I have been able to meet with other black midwives in person, attend the first annual National Black Midwives Association conference in Virginia, reconnect with family and forge some new partnerships to grow and support Black midwives. Connection is a priceless gift that nourishes the soul.
As a new fellow contemplates what to do and how to chart a path. Truly looking for connection is always a sound place to start. It is in connection that we grow, in connection that we learn.
