Entering into this fellowship, I was brimming with excitement and anticipation, ready to absorb knowledge like a sponge and engage deeply with the academic community. However, as I immersed myself in the formal academic systems, I quickly became aware of the shortcomings and limitations that continue to persist.
One of the most glaring issues I encountered was the lack of accountability within academic institutions. There seemed to be a prevailing culture of complacency, where challenging the status quo was often met with resistance. It became evident that these systems were not adequately addressing the voices of the oppressed and needed to evolve to become more inclusive and representative of diverse perspectives. As I navigated through my learning journey, I found myself grappling with the realization that my voice needed to be louder, bolder, and more persistent in advocating for change.
In many instances, I found myself in the position of teaching the teacher, pushing back against outdated notions and biases that permeated the academic environment. While I welcomed the opportunity to contribute to critical discourse and challenge conventional wisdom, I couldn’t help but feel frustrated by the resistance to change.
Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful and optimistic about the future of my fellowship. I eagerly anticipate the next steps, where I will have the opportunity to zero in with cultural leaders who are committed to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. By engaging with these leaders, I hope to gain valuable insights and strategies for effecting meaningful change within the academic sphere and beyond.
Ultimately, my journey as a fellow has reinforced the importance of perseverance, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to social justice. While the road ahead may be fraught with obstacles, I am determined to continue advocating for a more just and equitable world, both within academia and in society at large.
