Fellow Learning Log

As a new Bush Fellow (not anymore new), I had a mixed feeling of excitement and anxiety. On the one hand, I was happy about being recognized for the work I had been doing over the years and achieving this big milestone; on the other hand, I was worried about the task ahead and the things I wanted to achieve for myself. After the orientation, I felt like the fellowship was all about me: developing my leadership skills, knowledge, and self-care. This realization gave me a sense of pride, confidence, and trust placed on me.
The fellowship allowed me to take time off from my work as frequently as I needed without being worried about pay loss, gave me the courage and confidence to say no when someone in leadership is abusing their power, and be a voice for the voiceless. I am resigning from work this summer to seek other opportunities that will be more meaningful and impactful for my career. This would not have been possible without the Bush Fellowship. I am also graduating this Spring from the University of Minnesota with a Masters in Public Affairs (MPA). The Bush Fellowship funds made it possible to pay my tuition fees and other expenses to graduate on time without the fear of student debt.
I am planning to embark on the remainder of my Bush Fellowship to complete the work plan I developed and take maximum advantage of it. This summer, I plan to travel with my family to Kenya for self-care, strengthening family bonds, and exploring the education systems there.
