What has informed your approach to leading change in your community?

Listening to my elders and learning from the collective experiences of family and friends have been pivotal. These conversations have taught me the importance of tradition, resilience and the power of a united community when facing systemic challenges. I’ve also built a personal library over the years that has been a significant resource for self-teaching and expanding my understanding of history, justice and activism.

What was your first job and what lessons did you take away from it?

My first job was with the Urban League in Saint Paul, where I was paid $4 an hour to post flyers around the community. This role was not only my introduction to formal employment, but also a profound learning experience. It was during this time, through school and working in various settings, like a malt shop washing dishes or cutting grass, that I learned the value of hard work and developed a strong work ethic.

What is your favorite quote or expression?

“When we fight, we win,” by my mentor, Mel Reeves. This expression truly encapsulates my approach to activism — it is relentless, hopeful and transformative and motivates me to pursue large-scale changes for my community.
