Cloquet, MN — Rebekah Dunlap (Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior) is determined to reclaim and revitalize traditional Ojibwe practices related to parent and child health. She seeks to integrate what she has learned as a certified nurse midwife with her Anishinaabe traditional teachings. Her dream is to create the first-ever birth center on a U.S. Indian reservation, a safe space with Native practices and ceremonies related to pregnancy and birth. To achieve her vision, she will study with elders and other Indigenous knowledge keepers nationally and internationally. Currently an Indigenous certified lactation consultant, she plans to sit for the International Board of Lactation Consultants examination to become a licensed lactation consultant. During her Fellowship, she plans to take time to replenish herself after several challenging years as a doctoral student and health care worker during the pandemic.
