Ft. Yates, ND — Every three to five years the Standing Rock Sioux experience suicide clusters—at times in excess of 49 attempts in a 30-day period—with 16 completions over the last two decades. This is the highest rate in the nation. I hope to get "people moving together in a good way" concerning the issue of grieving the loss of a loved one. I will work to foster and resurrect a Dakota cultural practice called nagiwichopi (“to call back the spirit”) to develop a stronger indigenous perspective on grieving.
