Fargo, ND — Since 1997, the Fargo-Moorhead area has been an important refugee resettlement center. The influx of these new residents, most of whom don’t speak English, presents them and the community with significant challenges. I will use my Bush Fellowship to develop a team that can work with newly resettled refugee families to help them improve their English quickly and effectively using dedicated “literacy sponsors” or mentors. Working together, these new Americans and their mentors can make a profound impact on the Fargo-Moorhead community.
