Updates and Insights from Bush Fellows During Their Leadership Journey

For many years, I considered applying for a Bush Fellowship but the timing wasn’t right – other challenges and opportunities occupied me. But now, at a time when I was feeling routine in my work and a time when graduate school was opening a new world of thought and connections; at a time such as this, the Bush Fellowship seemed perfect. My plan was well thought out and built on my life story. I was thrilled, honored, and grateful to become a member of the 2016 cohort.

It was early morning at 9:30 am on March 3, 2016, when I checked my email as I have been patiently waiting to receive the news about the outcome of Bush Foundation Fellowship application. About 20 minutes earlier before I left home to drop off my kids to school, I told my wife that I have a feeling that a good news is on its way today or tomorrow! As soon as I dropped of my kids to school, I checked my email while at the school parking. There was-the email from Anita Patel, announcing the winners! A great sense of excitement and pressure kicked in at the same time for me!

My fellowship journey started exactly one year prior to applying. I found out about the fellowship opportunity and knew in my heart that it was the right path for me to journey one day, yet, I was realistic that, if granted the fellowship, I had to be sure I was passionate about what I would be devoting my time, energy, and spirit towards. I prayed and discussed my plans with close friends and mentors and spiritual teachers. I knew in my heart the road I wanted to take, yet, it wasn't the easiest road to travel.

Did you know that every Bush Fellow is expected to burn so brightly and with such an intensity that many communities employ their fellows to actually supplement their local energy grid? Perhaps it is due to this commitment to alternative energy, that the Foundation encourages the fellows to take care of themselves. Or perhaps, the hope is that these fellows are actually functional, approachable and energized after their world traveling, mass transit riding, fellowship period concludes.

“These are the times to grow our souls. Each of us is called upon to embrace the conviction that despite the powers and principalities bent on commodifying all human relationships, we have the power within us to create the world anew.” Grace Lee Boggs

The Fellowship is flying by! This has been both a journey I dreamed of and one I couldn’t have imagined. The motivation for my fellowship was to focus on my own healing and wellbeing; to learn all I can and gain new tools both for myself, as well as to use my new learning in the work I do. One of the first things I did as a fellow was to set aside time in my calendar to do “fellowship stuff”. This has included: journaling, meditating, reading, taking piano lessons, practicing tai chi, and going to conferences and retreats.

Being a Bush Fellow has allowed me to take action to confirm the needs that exist in Rochester. The first six months of the fellowship journey has been a phase of exploration and absorption. During this phase, I experienced a variety of emotions. I am constantly delighted and also overwhelmed by wonderful information and discoveries that come my way. First, I formed a small research team with the title, Project Art & Narrative (PAN). The mission of this team is to determine the attributes within creative activities that leads to the healing, wellness, and resiliency.
