An enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Ira grew up in Little Eagle and graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in International Studies. 

With fourteen years of combined experience in youth development, Native education policy, government affairs and government administration, Ira has worked in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, and for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. 

A resident of McLaughlin, Ira is a member of the McLaughlin Public School District Board of Education, and is a member of the South Dakota Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. As well, Ira is a volunteer advisor of various student activities at McLaughlin High School, including having co-coached the MHS girls basketball cheer team to win the Spirit of Six Award.
