Throughout the Bush Foundation’s history, grants to Human Services organizations made up a significant portion of the Foundation’s giving.
Many of the specific grantmaking areas grew organically based on the needs of specific communities. Three examples of historical giving in the Human Services category are:
| |
 |
Housing – From 1970 to 2008, the Bush Foundation made 196 grants totaling approximately $21.5 million in the area of Housing, with a focus on supportive services. The Foundation’s largest grant in its history of $3 million was made in this area to the Family Housing Fund of Minneapolis and St. Paul in 2000. |

 |
Legal Issues – From 1970 to 2008, the Foundation awarded more than $18.2 million in grants to strengthen legal services in and to various communities in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. |
| |
 |
Sheltered Workshops – From 1971 to 1982, the Foundation approved 29 grants amounting to more than $2.2 million in support of sheltered workshops for developmentally disabled adults. |
Other major grantmaking areas in the Human Services category that warrant their own sections in the Bush Legacy include funding to prevent and assist those affected by Domestic Violence and support for Immigrants and Refugees.
